The game console also became quite popular because of the numerous games that were released (by plug in cartridges) to be played with ColecoVision. The ColecoVision system was very similar to the Mattel product, Intellivision. The controller was rectangular and consisted of a numeric keypad and side buttons.

All the classic video games could be played on this machine including Donkey Kong, Lady Bug, Mouse Trap and Zaxxon. To make the device consumer friendly and much more accessible, Coleco had additional ports for many games that were also used by Atari and Intellivision.

Soon after racking up record sales, ColecoVision started to encounter both hardware problems and stiff competition from Atari, IBM and Apple, esp. in the video gaming business. Extensive research and development was done to revitalize the product but to no avail. Despite selling millions more, the company could not sustain itself and discontinued the device in 1984.
