Even though it was short lived, the Sega Genesis sold millions of devices globally. Its successful marketing campaign and the unique design of the hardware were the reasons for its success. One of the key features with which it over came its rivals was the powerful 16/32 bit processor which enabled it to play games like Sonic the Hedgehog.
When it came to game time, the Sega Genesis was a masterpiece despite all its criticism. The screen was rich in colors and the sound was exceptional. No matter what game was played on the Sega Genesis with its powerful 16 bit processor never slowed anything down.
In the decade that Sega Genesis was viable, many games were released that were great to play on the device. Besides Sonic the Hedgehog, other games included Phantasy Star, Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, Golden Axe and Outrun.
However, Nintendo was fast catching up with its own device and easily snuffed out the competition.
Despite the release of the Sega CD it failed to catch on. In 1997, the Sega Genesis system was finished as a new generation of CD based games had started with Saturn.
